IOW-09DAA4 Roman Steelyard Weight
Description
English: An incomplete cast lead steelyard weight of possible Roman date (AD 43-410).

This weight is spheroid in form and has a slightly flattened base. There are the remains of an embedded iron suspension loop at the top.
Around the periphery there are inscribed marks: VIΛ with a saltire cross within a square to the left with two vertical linear grooves above.
Height: 41.8mm; diameter: 47.3mm. Weight: c. 546.0g.

The surface is largely off-white and powdery. Within crevices there are flecks of a brown patina.
