Title
IOW-5BB8E2 Post-Medieval Vessel ('bird-feeder')
Description
English: A complete but misshapen post-Medieval cast or wrought lead-alloy vessel (c. 1500-c. 1700).
This 'bird-feeder' vessel was semi-circular in cross-section prior to being damaged. It has a semi-circular base and the sides flare upwards towards the which is decorated at the front. This decoration is indeterminate. At the front, below the rim, are two horizontal parallel raised lines. Below these features it has engraved initials B I. On the rear face, which was originally flat, there is a small circular piercing at the centre, close to the top. This piercing has a diameter of about 2.4mm. The inner and outer surfaces of the vessel are grey with traces of a buff patina.

Height: 49.38mm; width: 67.57mm; thickness: 24.81mm. Weight: 126.53g.

Similar containers have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database where they have been identified as Late Medieval to Early Post-Medieval bird feeders or bird seed containers. Alternative suggestions for use have been made, including: dice shakers, grain measures, blood-letting cups, inkwells or for water containers/fonts for private homes.
For comparison, see published vessels: Read (1995, 127-128; fig. 811; Egan et al (2005, 129; ref. 617).
