Title
IOW-658062 Post-Medieval Animal 'Crotal' Bell
Description
English: A complete post-Medieval cast copper-alloy spherical animal 'crotal' bell (1600-1800).

The sub-rectangular suspension loop at the top is about 10.4mm long, 13.9mm wide, 4.1mm thick and has an inverted 'U'-shaped aperture. The upper and lower hemispheres are divided by a prominent horizontal circumferential joining rib. At either side of the suspension loop, about half way down the side of the upper hemisphere, is a circular sound hole. Two sound holes in the lower hemisphere are integral with a sound "slit". The upper hemisphere is plain and the lower hemisphere has a 'sun-burst' design. Maker's initials are situated at either side of the slit: 'W' one side and 'K' on the other side. A spheroid iron 'sound-pea' remains intact within the bell and is fused to the side blocking one of the upper holes.
The outer surface of the bell is worn and has a matt green patina.

Height: 34.29mm; diameter: 27.56mm. Weight: 27.42g.
