Title |
IOW-6F3AC1Medieval Strap-End |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end buckle with a hollow end (also known as a 'box chape').
The terminal and the back plate are missing.
The hollow end has a flat front plate with bevelled sides cast together. It probably had a separate sheet copper-alloy back plate. On the front, at the terminal end, there is a pair of horizontal parallel ribs. At each corner of the attachment end there are the corroded remains of an iron rivet. Below the plate is a narrowed waist which flares and thickens. This part has a central circular perforation, 3.0mm in diameter. The waist and the flaring element are flat at the rear. At the front the plate is decorated. However, this decoration is indeterminate due to corrosion. It is possible that the decoration is in the form of one or more initials.
The object is corroded and in poor condition. Traces of gilding are visible on the front plate.
28.8 x 22.5 x 6.0mm. Weight: 11.24g.
These strap-ends, sometimes called 'lyre-shaped', date to the 15th century. |
