Title
IOW-DD86C1 Medieval Spur Buckle
Description
English: An almost complete Medieval cast copper-alloy spur buckle with an integral plate (c. 1250-c. 1350 AD).

The buckle is in two parts due to a break, parts of the copper-alloy pin and all the rivets are missing.
This buckle has a single oval loop, convex at the front and flat at the rear. It is 10.6mm in length and 15.6mm in width. The decorative integral plate is also convex at the front and flat at the rear.
The plate consists of two ridges close to the loop and a trefoil terminal which has moulded decoration at the front. The closest ridge to the loop has a circular hole for the pin and the other ridge has a circular rivet hole. The narrowed part of the plate adjoining this latter ridge has a decorative boss about mid-way along its length. The decoration is in the form of two/three small grooves. The trefoil terminal has three circular rivet holes forming a triangle. However, one of the holes is incomplete due to a casting flaw.
The buckle has a light green patina with bright green corrosion deposits in places. Some corrosion is active, particularly on the loop. The tip of the pin and part of the pin loop are missing due to old breaks. No trace of surface treatment.
45.6 x 15.6 x 4.6mm. Weight: 1.22g.
Egan (2007: 102) has suggested that this form of medieval buckle with a cast integral plate could have been used for spurs.
Egan has suggested that this form of Medieval buckle with a cast integral plate could have been used for spurs (Griffiths, D., Philpott, R.A. & Egan, G. 2007: 102).
A similar buckle has been published and dated c. 1250-1400 AD (Whitehead 1996: 34, ref: 199).

Similar buckles have been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. For example, see finds: DENO-D37AF1; ESS-DF8645; LVPL-40D835; NMS-059B60 and SF-E77D2.
