Summary[edit]

Description

This image shows the International Space Station and space shuttle Atlantis crossing (or "transiting") the Sun, as seen from south Manchester on 15th July 2011 at 12:04:35pm. In the orientation of the ISS in this image, I believe the Shuttle docks at the top, but facing the camera, so I don't think the Shuttle can be clearly seen. There are a few nice sunspots which add to the image too.

This shuttle mission is the last, so this is one of the last opportunities to capture such an event, although of course, the International Space Station will continue to orbit the Earth for some time.

From my location, the ISS passed about 310 miles above me. Although the Sun is massive, it's also very far away - 93 million miles or so - so because of parallax, I had to be within a 3 mile wide path at exactly the right time to capture this image, and be lucky to avoid the inevitable cloud of course! I was 250 metres from the centre of the path but even so, the ISS was in front of the Sun for only 0.6s. It crossed from top to bottom (West is approximately top, due to the orientation of the camera.)

The image was taken with an unmodified Canon 500D DSLR camera at prime focus on an Celestron C9.25, using Baader solar film to allow me to safely image the Sun. I ran the camera in continuous shooting mode (Which takes 3 photos per second), and took about 30 images. This image is the only one which had the ISS on it. If I had my camera rotated 90 degrees, I may have caught the ISS near one of the edges which are cut off.

The exposure is 1/2,500s at ISO 400.

I travelled to be able to witness the transit, and had only finished setting up 5 minutes beforehand. It was also my first attempt at a capturing a transit, so I feel very fortunate to have done so.
