English: Khumbu and Imja Valleys in 2007
Khumbu and Imja valleys seen from the upper slopes of Taboche (6367 m). Glacier retreat is a complex phenomenon, and still not enough is known about it. Although it is clear that, in general, glaciers all over the world are shrinking this is not the case everywhere. These photographs from the 1950s and from 2007 indicate that warming has not (yet) led to a dramatic change in ice cover at high altitudes (above 5000 m), where temperatures remain well below zero year round. This could change rapidly as the altitude of the "snow line" gradually moves up. Better measurements and interdisciplinary studies are needed to determine whether the thickness of the glaciers is changing - and with this the total volume of ice - even where glacier area appears unaffected. Das Khumbu und das lmja Tal fotograiiert von den oberen Hängen des Taboche (6367 m). Gletscherschwund ist ein komplexes Phänomen, das noch relativ unerforscht ist. Obwohl bekannt ist, dass Gletscher weltweit generell schwinden, gibt es noch Ausnahmen. Diese Aufnahmen aus den 1950er Iahren und von 2007 zeigen, dass die Erwärmung bislang noch nicht zu einem dramatischen Wandel der Eisdecke im Hochgebirge (über 5000 m), wo Temperaturen das ganze Iahr über weit unter 0 Grad Celsius bleiben, geführt hat. Das könnte sich jedoch schnell ändern, da sich die Schneegrenze stetig nach oben bewegt. Bessere Messungen und interdisziplinäre Studien sind notwendig, um festzustellen, ob sich die Dicke der Gletscher verändert - und damit das Gesamtvolumen des Eises - auch dort, wo Gletschergebiete noch keinen olfensichtlichen Rückgang zeigen. Le retrait des glaciers est un phénomène complexe dont il reste beaucoup à découvrir. Bien qu’il soit évident qu’à travers le monde et d’une manière générale les glaciers diminuent, cela n’est pas le cas partout. Ces images des années 50 et de 2007 montrent que le réchauffement n’a (pour le moment) pas entraîné un changement spectaculaire dans la couverture de glace en haute altitude (au-dessus de 5000 mètres) ou les températures demeurent bien inférieures à zéro tout au long de l’année. Mais un changement pourrait avoir lieu rapidement car l’altitude de la limite des neiges éternelles se hausse graduellement. Des mesures plus précises et des études interdisciplinaires sont nécessaires afin de déterminer si l'épaisseur des glaciers et le volume total de glace se sont modifiés - même si en apparence les glaciers ne semblent pas affectés.
