As origens da igreja matriz de Britiande, dedicada a São Silvestre, remontam, pelo menos, aos meados do século XII, época em que, pela primeira vez, surge referida na documentação. Mais tarde, já no século XVII, o eventual estado de degradação do templo primitivo originou a sua reconstrução, numa linguagem maneirista que se manifesta quer na arquitectura quer na primeira campanha decorativa do interior. A fachada denuncia, no entanto, intervenções posteriores, talvez contemporâneas da remodelação da torre sineira, no século XIX. Esta, em cantaria, contrasta vivamente com o alçado da igreja. É aberta, no piso térreo, por um portal de volta perfeita encimado por janelão rectangular e um friso, ao nível do lançamento da empena do templo, separa este registo do seguinte, onde se encontram duas sineiras. A fachada da igreja é delimitada por pilastras nos cunhais, encimadas por pináculos semelhantes aos que coroam a torre, terminando em empena. Ao centro, abre-se o portal de verga recta, sobrepujado por óculo semicircular e nicho com a imagem de São Silvestre. No interior, a campanha decorativa seiscentista manifesta-se na capela-mor, revestida por azulejos de tapete, enquanto a nave é coberta por caixotões de madeira pintados com motivos geométricos. De uma outra intervenção mais tardia, já da centúria seguinte, são os elementos de talha dourada, entre os quais se destaca o revestimento do arco triunfal, que extravasa os seus limites integrando os retábulos colaterais e o retábulo-mor. Alguns dos retábulos das capelas inscrevem-se também do barroco joanino, enquanto outros apresentam modelos neoclássicos ou conservam os exemplares maneiristas.
