Description

Dominando o poente da antiga Praça Nova, ergue-se a igreja seiscentista de São João Evangelista, sede da paróquia de São Bartolomeu, que fora pertença do Colégio dos Jesuítas, conhecida por Igreja de São Bartolomeu.

Ostenta a sua fachada certa imponência no estilo barroco, forrada a bardilho marmóreo da região, com três ordens de janelas e três portais ladeados de colunas dóricas. Acompanham-na duas exuberantes torres quadrangulares, sem coruchéus, e em cujos campanários de seis sinos se inclui o famoso Caracena que serviu o relógio público da Torre de Menagem do Castelo e que nas Guerras da Restauração foi fortemente danificado pelas tropas do general espanhol daquele nome.

No interior do templo, abundante de mármores e de boa talha, é notável o sacrário de madeira dourada e podem apreciar-se, ainda, esculturas de madeira estofada e diversas telas dos séculos XVII e XVIII.

Na sacristia anexa, de onde saíram as peças mais valiosas para o Museu de Arte Sacra, existem, ainda, diversas alfaias do culto, bastante apreciáveis, além de um aparatoso arcaz paramenteiro de madeira de carvalho.
