Esta igreja foi mandada construir em 1737, apresentando grande simplicidade e uma arquitetura elementar. Em 1750 é benzida e acolhe a imagem do padroeiro. Em 1881 reiniciaram-se as obras com a demolição das estruturas provisórias e das casas que estavam em frente ao corpo da igreja. Os trabalhos terminaram em inícios do século XX, sem que tivessem sido construídas as duas torres previstas, mas apenas uma. A planta da igreja é longitudinal, com capela-mor e nave única retangulares. A capela-mor é separada da nave por arco de cruzeiro de volta perfeita e nela se destaca o retábulo, de talha azul e dourada, manifestação ainda do gosto eclético dos finais do séc. XIX. Localizada na “sala de visitas” da cidade e apesar de incompleta, em 1751, por indulto da Santa Sé, a igreja recebeu o título de basílica por Breve de Benedito XIV.
