Description

Fundada em 1686, na subida da Ladeira do Varadouro, a igreja foi construída com recursos do Senado e donativos populares. No final do século XVII, a igreja foi oferecida para sede da irmandade dos soldados, mas foi rejeitada, continuando a Câmara com o encargo de sua manutenção.

Já em 1819 foi realizado um grande serviço de restauração e colocadas na fachada principal do templo as armas do Senado da Câmara, que são o globo e a cruz de São Salvador, o padroeiro da cidade.
