A Igreja de São Marcos tem as suas origens numa pequena capela que existia junto à margem do Rio Tejo e cujo Santo padroeiro era o dito São Marcos. No entanto, pela sua localização, esta sofria ciclicamente dos danos causados pelas cheias, de tal modo que não houve alternativa à sua demolição e reedificação noutro local mais protegido da inclemência das águas. Quando surgiu o imperativo de alargar a estação de Comboios de Santa Apolónia, em Lisboa, foi necessário demolir a igreja de Santa Apolónia, antiga e dotada de belos ornamentos. Ao tomar conhecimento desta situação, o Dr. Ruy Sommer D'Andrade (dono da Quinta do Arripiado), sendo amigo pessoal do Cardeal Patriarca de Lisboa, pediu que a fachada da igreja fosse poupada para ser reconstruída numa nova igreja na sua aldeia natal.
