Description
English: "A Most Exact and Accurat Table of the Firstten Persecutions of the Primative Church under the Heathen Tirants of Rome," illustration of depictions of cruel punishments meted out to the early Christians. The illustration accompanied the 1641 edition of John Foxe's "Acts and Monuments" ("Book of Martyrs") between pages 44 and 45. Inscribed on verso in graphite is the notation: "Copy from a Bolognese print, about 1590." Engraving. 504 mm x 583 mm. Courtesy of the British Museum, London.
