Text Appearing After Image: Branctrife and pseudo-brancliia,Lepidosteus. xxii. 324 the primary arterial arch, correspondin,hyoid one, developes either a simple(uniserial) gill, or a plexiform, plu-mose, rudiment of a gill, or both, orneither. In the Lepidosteus this archretains its primitive connection withthe extremity of the branchi-arterialtrunk, and developes on each side asmall uniserial pectinated gill, fig. 323,l, from the membrane clothing theinner surface of the cerato-hyoid andpreopercular bones: the vein or effe-rent vessel, e, of this gill goes to a smallerpectinated organ, ib. E, consisting like-wise of one series of vascular filaments, which agrees with thei pseuclobranchia of other fishes in being supplied with arterialblood. In the Sturgeon, the Lepidosiren, and the Plagiostomes therepresentative of the primary vascular arch has become, by partialbifurcation of the branchi-arterialtrunk, a secondary branch, sent offby the artery of the first branchialarch: but it nevertheless developesa simple gi
