In the Lepidosteus this archretains its primitive connection withthe extremity of the branchi-arterialtrunk, and developes on each side asmall uniserial pectinated gill, fig. 323,l, from the membrane clothing theinner surface of the cerato-hyoid andpreopercular bones: the vein or effe-rent vessel, e, of this gill goes to a smallerpectinated organ, ib. E, consisting like-wise of one series of vascular filaments, which agrees with thei pseuclobranchia of other fishes in being supplied with arterialblood.
