Text Appearing Before Image: rom the chelonian ventricleis shown in fig. 336, where P is the pulmonary, a the left aorta,a the right aorta, the most posterior, or dorsal, of the threearteries. The ventricle is almost wholly occupied by a spongymuscular structure, and the cavitiesare smaller in Testudo than in Emys.The left auricle, fig. 336, M, receivesthe arterial blood from the lungs bya single vein, the common trunk of thepulmonary veins, ib. I, I: it opens intothe back part of the auricle near theseptum, and is guarded by a singleoblique membranous fold, ib. M. Eachauriculo-ventricular orifice is guardedby a fold which extends across it fromeither side of the base of the inter-auricular septum; to that of the leftauricle a small part of the muscularstructure is attached by chordae tendineae. Opposite to the rightvalve a semilunar ridge projects, in Testudo indica, which is therudiment of the second auriculo-ventricular valve in the Cro-codile, and of the fleshy valve of that orifice in the right ventricle 336
