In the Toad (Bufo) the chordae vocales are thinelastic membranes, and in two pairs, fig.351, a and b : the sacculi are seen to belodged in the large arytenoid cartilages.The males of the common and edibleFrogs (Rand) have two submandibularsacs, the male Tree-Frog (Hyla) hasone such sac, opening by a straight canalinto the larynx, and susceptible of con-siderable distension by air during thecroak. All these diversities of laryngealstructure affect the loudness, deepness,or sharpness of the peculiar vocal notesof Frogs and Toads. The air passesto the lungs, fig. 350, g, 351, c, d, byshort bronchi, fig. 350,/, save in thePipa9 in which the bronchial tubes are long, especially in thefemale.
