Title
Incomplete and bent silver bodkin or head-dress pin of Post Medieval, seventeenth century date (AD 1600 – AD 1700). Treasure case no. BM2005 T326. Detail of each face.
Description
English: Incomplete and bent silver bodkin or head-dress pin of Post Medieval, seventeenth century date (AD 1600 - AD 1700). Treasure case no. BM2005 T326. Length (if straightened) 96mm, maximum width 5mm and maximum thickness 2mm. Weight 6.76g.

The bodkin consists of three distinct elements defined by two horizontal circumferential ribs.

The upper part is 15mm in length and is rectangular in cross-section although each corner has a minor bevel. Close to the rounded top is a circular eyelet, about 2mm in diameter. The eyelet is slightly off-centre. At the top is a small cone-shaped finial. Decoration on both faces is in the form of incised vertical linear grooves. On one face, close to the eyelet, is an indistinctive and worn maker's mark, possibly the initials I over C.

The middle part of the bodkin is 18mm in length, is rectangular in cross-section and accommodates a rectangular opening, 13mm in length and 1.5mm in width. Close to either side of the opening on both faces is a minor vertical groove flanked by seven small equally spaced linear punch marks. These are parallel to the vertical grooves and the opening.

The lower part, the shank, is bent from its original alignment and if straightened, would be 63mm in length. It is rectangular in cross-section although each corner is bevelled. The bevels on the shank are more pronounced than the bevels on the upper part of the bodkin. The shank tapers in width from 3.5mm at the top to 2.5mm where there is an old break. The upper part of the shank is decorated with incised vertical linear grooves similar to those on the upper part of the bodkin. Although damaged and incomplete, the surviving part is in good condition.
