Title
Incomplete cast copper alloy trapezoidal shoe or knee buckle of possible mid seventeenth century to early eighteenth century date.
Description
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy trapezoidal shoe or knee buckle of possible mid seventeenth century to early eighteenth century date. Length 32mm, width 24mm and 3.5mm thick. Weight 7.28g.

The frame is drilled to accommodate an iron spindle which remains intact. The copper alloy pin and copper alloy anchor chape are both incomplete (the tips of both the flat pin and the flat chape are broken and missing and the breaks appear to be old. Viewing the buckle in plan, the upper face is generally convex with concave sides. At either side of the spindle, the frame has moulded scrolls. The outside edge and the inside edge are incurved to form pin rests. The reverse face of the frame is flat. As viewed from the side with the end of the spindle facing, the frame curves slightly downwards either side of the spindle. The buckle has a dark green/brown patina and appears to be in stable condition. A maker’s mark appears on the reverse face of the chape in the form of serifed capitals “TG”.
