Title
Incomplete copper alloy oval buckle frame with a separate hinged plate. Medieval, possibly thirteenth century (AD 1230 – AD 1260).
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy oval buckle frame with a separate hinged plate. Medieval, possibly thirteenth century (AD 1230 – AD 1260). Length 48mm, maximum width of buckle frame 23mm, maximum thickness of buckle frame 4mm. Weight 6.29g.

The frame is 18.4mm in length, 23mm in width and 4mm thick. The outside edge of the frame is widened and angled in cross-section and there is a slight indentation, a pin rest, at the top. The sides of the frame are evenly narrowed. The bar is narrowed and off-set and is circular in cross-section, about 2.2mm in diameter. The rectangular copper alloy sheet plate, which is hinged around the bar, is 35mm in length and 16mm in width. The plate has a slot for the pin and is recessed for the frame. The pin is missing. The front plate has a rivet hole at each corner. Three of the holes are filled with the remains of copper alloy rivets. A rivet has not survived in the fourth hole at the attachment end. This hole is 3mm in diameter. Near the pin slot on the front plate is a deposit of iron corrosion, indicating perhaps, that the pin was made of iron. The back plate is 15mm in length. However, due to its ragged edges, it is unclear whether it is complete or has an old break. It has two rivet holes of different sizes. One hole is 3.2mm in diameter and the other hole is 2mm in diameter.
The front plate is decorated with a double line of opposed punched triangles which form a rectangular border near the edge of the plate.
The frame and the plate are corroded and have a patchy mid-green patina. The front of the front plate has traces of tinning.
