Title |
Incomplete copper alloy pin of probable Roman date (AD 43 – AD 410). Possibly a dress-pin or hair-pin. |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete copper alloy pin of probable Roman date (AD 43 – AD 410). Possibly a dress-pin or hair-pin. Length 25mm, Maximum diameter of head 10.5mm, maximum diameter of shaft 4.5mm. Weight 5.62g. The lower part of the shaft is broken and missing. The solid head has a conical upper and rounded lower half and does not have a collar at the junction with the shaft. The shaft, which is about 14mm in length, is sub-circular in cross-section, and tapers slightly from the head towards the break which is old. Beneath the head, the shaft is about 4.5mm in diameter and at the old break it is about 3.4mm in diameter. The pin is corroded and in poor condition. Prior to the effects of corrosion, the shaft was probably circular in cross-section. Small areas of a dark green patina survive beneath the head. |
