Title |
Incomplete copper alloy spur buckle of probable Medieval date |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper alloy strap fitting for a sword belt with an integral plate and rearward projecting attachment hook. Post-Medieval. Length 30mm, width 11.5mm and 1.5mm thick. Weight 2.80g. The frame is broken and missing. The breaks are old. Viewed in plan, with the hook to the right the plate is generally trapezoidal in plan. It is slightly convex at the front and flat at the rear. There are two holes for rivets along the centre-line and the hole nearest to the absent frame is filled with the remains of an iron rivet. At the end of the plate, next to the hook, there is decoration in the form of a moulded vertical step and a groove which are parallel to each other. The attachment hook, which is slightly twisted to one side, is D-shaped in cross-section. The piece appears to be in a stable condition. A parallel for this fitting is illustrated in Margeson 1993, 38, fig. 22, ref. 257 and has been dated by context 1600-1650. |
