DescriptionInside Broadway Bridge during bascule-span opening - with streetcar overhead power apparatus temporarily rotated downward.jpg | View of the roadway of the Broadway Bridge (Portland, Oregon) during an opening of the bascule lift span, looking east-northeast. The draw span is in the process of rotating upwards here, and in the foreground are the two sets of gates across the roadway and the complex overhead-power apparatus for the Portland Streetcar which is designed to rotate downward about 90 degrees during bridge openings. Streetcars previously crossed the bridge from its opening in 1913 until 1940; the track was subsequently removed or paved over, and the overhead trolley wire taken down. Streetcars returned to the bridge in 2012, but the overhead wire equipment is more complex than before, as modern streetcars use pantographs instead of trolley poles. |
