English: In a mountainous terrain - dominated by a mosque (?) - a vast, rubble-strewn, pitted excavation site, surrounded by a tall steel sheet piling fence. Dozens of construction teams, armed with standing and mobile cranes, a dump truck, tractors and a tractor trailer... are at work. To the left of the mobile crane, can be seen a team of surveyors. .

English: The international campaign for the saving of the Nubian monuments, was launched by UNESCO in 1960. Following the construction of the Aswan high dam, the monuments of the island of PHILAE are permanently flooded to a third of their height and subject to daily fluctuations in the water level which eat away their foundations and threaten to bring them down to ruins. In May 1968, it was decided to dismantle and re-erect the monuments on the neighbouring island of AGILKIA which is sufficiently elevated to be above the maximum water level. Work in progress for the reconstruction of the Philae temples on their new site at AGILKIA island.
Français : Campagne internationale pour la sauvegarde des monuments de Nubie lancée par l'UNESCO en 1960. A la suite de la construction du haut-barrage d'Assouan, les monuments de l'île de PHILAE plongent en permanence dans l'eau sur un tiers environ de leur hauteur et ils sont soumis à des variations quotidiennes de niveau qui usent les fondements et entraineront inévitablement l'effondrement de l'ensemble. C'est pourquoi il a été décidé, en mai 1968, de déplacer les monuments sur l'île voisine d'AGILKIA, assez élevée pour toujours émerger au-dessus du niveau maximum des eaux. Travaux en cours pour le remontage des temples sur leur nouveau sîte d'AGILKIA.
