Title
Iron Age - Sword Pommel
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy sword chape of Roman date. The chape is comprised of a chunky and elongate bifid lipped terminal with widely flaring and curved upper edges. The opposite end terminates in a worn break and has been compressed out of shape. Short slots are present to either side of the slot.

The metal has a mid greyish-green patina and is very worn. The object is 21.7mm long, 27.1mm wide, 16.7mm thick and weighs 21.6g.

Jody Joy, Curator of European Iron Age Collections at the British Museum, comments that this example is "one of Stead's (2006. British Iron Age Swords and Scabbards. London, BM Press) Type J chapes described as 'short bifurcating bronze or brass chapes' (p.15). The best parallel is the chape from the Embleton, Cumbria sword have in the British Museum collections (<a href="http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=831601&partId=1">http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=831601&partId=1</a>) which is dated to AD 50 - 200, so strictly speaking Roman".
