Title
Iron Age or Roman Brooch
Description
English: An incomplete late Iron Age or Roman cast copper alloy two-peice brooch, most likely of the Colchester group (Mackreth 2011 plates 23-30), dating to the period circa AD 25 - 60. The spring mechanism is almost entirely intact consisting of 5 coils (one missing) and an external chord, which emerges from the edges of the coils on the front side of the brooch. Three coils are set either side of a central head through which the axis bar runs. The central head terminates at the point where it meets the external chord on one side whilst, on the other, it blends into the bow. The top of the bow has wide, flat wings which form a platform on which the spring mechanism rests. The bow then sharply tapers, and has bent out of shape. The bow has corroded badly and is covered in a green patina.
