Notes | frock jacket, Sergeant J Copland, 5 and 10 New Zealand Mounted Rifles, Anglo Boer War 2356 (8682) Sgt JJ Copland served with 5NZMR Artillery section 31.3.1900-11.7.1901, and reenlisted with 10NZMR leaving NZ on 14.4.1902. His service included a period with the Rhodesia Field Force Artillery. Soon after the outbreak of the 2nd Boer War John Copland of Birkenhead, Auckland joined up with the 5th NZMR (Artillery Section). He embarked for South Africa on 31 March 1900, arriving at Beira on 27 April 1900. Gunner Copland served with the 5th Contingent from 31.3.1900 to 11 July 1901 and qualified for the Cape Colony, Transvaal and Rhodesia bars and was almost certainly one of the New Zealanders manning two 15-pounders at the siege of Lichtenburg by De LA Rey and his men on 2nd-3rd March 1901 – this may have been as part of the 1 (NZ) Bty RFA. He also served with the Rhodesia Field Force Artillery. Following a one-month leave period Gunner Copland was discharged on 11 August 1901 as having “completed his period of service”, but on 9 April the following year re-enlisted with the 10th Contingent sailing from New Zealand on ss Drayton George on 14 April 1902. He received his final discharge on 30 September 1902 with the rank of Sergeant, and had served overseas for a total of 1 year 117 days Following his return to New Zealand John Copland was employed as a marble polisher and monumental mason until his retirement in 1957. He married Eliza Hannah Courtney in 1910 and had two sons, Cecil John James Copland born 1910, and Leonard Courtney Copland born 1911. A brother 10-1351 William Albert Thaxter Copland served during WW1 and was killed on Gallipoli on 8 August 1915. John died on 28 October 1975 at Paparoa Road Tirau and was buried at the Hamilton Lawn Cemetery. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
