Description

This cicada-shaped jade carving has a smooth surface and a simple design, which vividly renders the characteristic features of the insect. Objects of this type would be placed in the mouth of the deceased and are often found in tombs of the Han dynasty. Chinese beliefs in the symbolic and magical implications of jade cicada can be traced back to the Shang dynasty (approximately 1600-1050 BCE). The life cycle of the cicadea, from an egg to an adult, from being underground to flying in the air, is a perfect representation of the universal cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
