I have that affinity with Janice Galloway that comes from no more than a shared culture rooted in the geography of Ayrshire's working-class villages and small towns. Janice was born in sea-washed Saltcoats, while I had made my appearance nine years earlier a dozen miles inland in the villages surrounding industrial Kilmarnock, or at least, Kilmarnock could be described as "industrial" then. My first encounter with her was thanks to BBC's Radio 4 when by accident I heard her reading from her biographical memoir "This is Not About Me". It stopped me in my tracks, for sure her voice is as beguiling as that of Charlotte Green but it was the content that struck home. This honest tale of growing-up in a family where your mother regularly enjoined her never to have children because "they will spoil your life", an elder sister with an over-weening concern for self combined with a cruel nature does not make for the easiest childhood. But this lady is a survivor and a lot more besides. Tonight she has been talking about her latest book of short stories "Jellyfish", (Also read recently on Radio 4) I have a copy but managed to leave it at home so here she is signing two of her earlier books for me: "The Trick is to Keep Breathing" and "Foreign Parts" |
