ジャパンは基は大阪など近畿圏を基盤としたディスカウントスーパーで、創業者である桐間幹二の個人商として1980年発足後、1982年に法人化（株式会社）された。その後、関東（主に東京・埼玉）にも店舗を拡大したが、2004年に業務の拡大などを念頭に、スギ薬局傘下のブランドとなった。
なお運営会社は2013年にスギ薬局の親会社・スギホールディングスに統合されている。
