Title
Jet cross pendant, side view
Description
English: Carved jet cross made from Whitby Jet. The cross is equal-armed, each arm flares slightly at the end. At the centre and at the end of each are, the cross has a small ring and dot and these are joined together with four single lines radiating from the centre. The cross has a polished surface and the design may have some sort of inlay. The upper arm is pierced with a small circular perforation for hanging as a pendant. The pendant is slightly wedge shaped in section and it thicker at the end where the hole for hanging is.

A similar parallel can be seen in Finds from Anglo-Scandinavian York by Mainman and Rogers, page 2590, Fig.1284, No.9862. The cited example came from 12th century dumps at Coppergate and a similar example has also been recovered on a skeleton from Scarborough which was dated to the 10th century (Mainman & Rogers, 2000) so it seems likely that this example is of a similar date. The cross weighs 1.38g and measures 24.5mm in length, 21.3mm in width and 5.5mm in thickness.
