Title
Jet or shale pendant
Description
English: A jet Cross Pendant of Pierce Type A (Pierce, E. 2013. 'Jet Cross Pendants from the British Isles and Beyind: Forms, Distribution and Use', Medieval Archaeology 57, 198-211). The pendant is in the form of an equal armed cross, and is decorated with five ring and dot motifs. The central rign and dot motif is the largest and has a double outer ring. A further ring and dot motif is located on each arm. Three of the arms are squared off, while the upper one gently flares outwards. This arm has a hole drilled through it from side to side, allowing it to be suspended.

Measurements: 11mm by 11 mm with a depth of 4mm, weight 0.47 g.

A similar pendant from Wombwell, Barnsley is recorded on the PAS database (SWYOR-3304B6). The discussion for this item cites a parallel from a 12th century dump at Coppergate, York (Mainman and Rogers, Finds from Anglo-Scandinavian York, page 2590, Fig.1284, No.9862). A recent survey of jet cross pendants by Pierce (2013) suggests these are 12th century in date, and were probably manufactured at Whitby Abbey. They probably functioned as protective amulets.
