Description
English: Jonathan Portes - Brexit and the UK Economy

(IIEA)

About the Speech:

In his address to the Institute, Professor Portes discussed the economic and political implications of Brexit for the UK. He assessed the short-term economic impacts of various scenarios for the current negotiations between the UK and the European Union, ranging from “chaotic Brexit” to a “velvet divorce”. He also examined the longer-term economic impacts on the UK, with a particular focus on immigration and labour mobility.

About the Speaker:

Jonathan Portes is Professor of Economics and Public Policy and King’s College London and Senior Fellow at The UK in a Changing Europe (http://ukandeu.ac.uk/). He was formerly Director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, prior to which he was Chief Economist at the Cabinet Office. His current research concentrates on issues related to immigration and labour mobility, both within the EU and outside; and the economic implications of Brexit. His other research interests include labour markets, fiscal policy, social security and welfare, and the use of evaluation and evidence in public policy.
