Title
English: Josephine McDermott, ca. 1901
Description
English:

Josephine Patricia Brennan was born in Chicago in 1871 and married Edward L. Nordhoff in 1888, at age 16. The couple moved to Seattle and opened the dry goods store that became The Bon Marche. Their store survived the economic depression of the early 1890s and boomed with the gold rush at the end of the decade. Mrs. Nordhoff remained active in the management of the store after the death of her husband and her marriage to Frank McDermott. This photo, by Seattle photographer Frank LaRoche in about 1901, shows Josephine McDermott. She is fashionably dressed in a tucked white blouse and a large hat. This photo may have been taken at the time of her second marriage.
