Description

On 4 June 1840, the Cook Strait sheet of te Tiriti o Waitangi was signed at Motungarara, the island near Kāpiti Island. It was signed by the rangatira Te Rangihiroa and Te Ohu, after Henry Williams had arrived aboard the Ariel. Their tohu (sign or mark) were the last to be attached to the Cook Straight sheet (see them here: www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/12195249795).

This inset from a larger 1850 British Admiralty chart shows the southern end of Kapiti Island and the three islands near it. Motungarara Island is the island closest to Kāpiti, labelled Hiko I.
