Title
KENT-28DF24: Candlestick
Description
English: A Medieval cast copper-alloy tripod candlestick, c. 1350-1400. The candlestick has a turned saucer base 46.2mm in diameter, with three turned concentric groves decorating the surface inside the raised edge. Part of this base is missing (old break). There are three step-like feet emerging from the reverse of the base at 12 o'clock, 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock; the feet terminate in worn trifid ends. The stem is circular in cross-section, 18.3mm long, and tapers towards a square collar which in turn supports the two flat sides of the open socket into which the candle would have been inserted. The socket is summounted by a circular collar,19.7 mm in external diameter. The central chuck mark from the turning is present on the base, and there are filing marks over the surface of the stem and socket.

A very similar example can be seen in Egan et al (1998) p149, in which the author discusses the possibility that this type of candlestick was imported from the Continent, although there is also a suggestion that they were also made in England.

The candlestick is 68.3mm long and weighs 79.14g.
