KENT-C21594: Roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Roman copper alloy zoomorphic brooch in the shape of a bird dating from the 2nd century AD. The main body of the brooch has a rounded front and tapers towards the tail end, in a tear-drop shape. The body is a very shallow triangular shape in section, with a ridge running along the back of the bird and a completely flat underside. The neck and head are very small and extend outwards and upwards from the body of the brooch.

The brooch has been decorated with twelve ring and dot motifs incised along the bird's back, and an additional two as its eyes. The reverse is undecorated and has the broken remains of a pin lug protuding from it. The brooch is broken at a visible division between the body of the bird and its tail, which is missing. This brooch is also missing the pin and the pin catch which would have been on the reverse of the tail end of the brooch.

There are some areas of active corrosion on the edges of the bird brooch.
