KENT-E80066 - An almost complete copper alloy Romano-British figurine depicting Venus nude, dating to AD c.43 - 410 |

Description |
English: An almost complete copper alloy Romano-British figurine depicting Venus nude, dating to AD c.43 - 410. Dr Ben Croxford comments that the figurine depicts Venus standing in the contrapostal form (weight on her right leg, left leg bent slightly) with her left arm raised, wringing out her hair after bathing with her left hand, her right hand is missing and would have likely held a shell, towel or her clothes.
The figure is wearing a circular headpiece which projects upwards at a steep angle around the crown of the head; this tapers towards the nape of the neck, below the figure's hair and appears to be tied in a knot, ending slightly below the knot in a raised rectangle. Given that Venus is bathing, the headpiece depicted is possibly intended to represent a towel. The head is tilted at an angle, leaning slightly to the figure's right. The crown of the head is covered with moulded straight lines depicting the figure's hair. Surrounding the face, in front of the headpiece is a series of raised sections, depicting curls. These extend on either side of the head; on the right side of the figure, coiling beneath the headpiece, down her neck and ending in a curl on her right shoulder. On the left side, extending down the side of the head and then projecting outwards at an angle, the hair is then grasped in the figure's left hand, extending through it and then flowing down to rest on her upper arm, stretching towards her elbow. The figure's face has a defined brown ridge which meets the upper portion of the nose, moulded circular eyes and a pronounced upper and lower lip. The face tapers towards a narrow, rounded chin. The neck is slender when viewed from the front, while the reverse depicts the headpiece and hair as described above. On her right side, her shoulder slopes downwards and is rounded as it meets her upper arm. The arm is set away from the body and tapers slightly towards the elbow, at the elbow her arm extends towards the front of the figure, attaching her forearm to her right lower waist. The hand is missing from this arm and appears to be broken at the wrist. Her left shoulder extends almost horizontally to meet the upper arm, with a small rounded area possibly intended to depict the shoulder. The arm extends horizontally, bending at the elbow and reaching upwards to grip her hair in her left hand. The hand is clearly depicted, with four fingers facing the front, with her thumb on the reverse of the coil of hair. As the figure is depicted placing her weight on her right leg, her torso and waist are leaning towards her right. On the front of the torso, two raised circular areas depict the figure's breasts; her waist extends vertically on either side, creating a slender torso. Below her torso, the figure has a small circular hollow representing her navel with a slightly pronounced stomach below. On either side, the figure's hips curve gradually outwards forming the figure's thighs, then gradually taper to form the top of the legs and knees. The back of the figure is slender and largely flat with a slightly hollow running vertically the length of her back, presenting her spine. There is a slight hollow at the base of the back, before the curving outwards to create the figure's bottom, there is a horizontal groove below the bottom, where it meets the top of the legs. The figure's legs separate at the thigh above the knee and the right leg is straight. It tapers slightly towards the knee, represented with a rounded kneecap, the curves outwards on both sides to form a sculpted calf. The foot of this leg is missing and is broken at the ankle. The left leg is bending forwards and is bent at the rounded knee, then reaches back and widens gradually to form the calf. Her lower leg tapers to her ankle, and her food is projecting forwards with upturned toes. A comparable figure is recorded on the database as record ESS-CEA6C1. |
