Gilt bronze gong from Kofukuji, Nara, Japan. Official name is Kagenkei (華原磬), but it is unclear when the gong got this name. The gong 鐘 is described in old texts as a konku (金鼓), literally meaning "metal drum". Lion base, with four dragon coiled around to form a frame around the round gong. Height 96.0 (cm?). 8cent. Tang China or Japan, Nara Period. (from Ancient Buddhist Treasures of Kofukuji Temple 「興福寺国宝展」(Art Research Foundation 1997) Exhibit catalog, Item #29.
