Description |
English: Kanaskat, Washington, stands on the Green River, eight miles northeast of Enumclaw. Around 1907, the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad, known as the Milwaukee Road, came through Snoqualmie Pass and crossed the Northern Pacific line near Kanaskat, which became the transfer point between the two lines. While the 1912 city directory lists several farmers, a grocery store and a hotel, most Kanaskat residents were involved in some way with the Northern Pacific railroad. This photo, probably taken in the 1910s, shows the railroad depot at Kanaskat, Washington. The stationmaster watched along the track from the windowed area below the tower-like order board. He could change the order board to tell trains whether or not to stop. If the depot's shingled roof caught fire, he tipped over the water-filled barrels at the roof peak to stop the blaze. Original photograph: 190-. Copied after 1975 by the Museum of History and Industry.
