"Beide Miniaturen, Herzog Karl Alexander von Lothringen und seine Gemahlin darstellend1, entstanden vermutlich im Jahr ihrer Hochzeit, das zugleich auch das Todesjahr der Herzogin war. Karl Alexander von Lothringen (1712-1780) folgte seinem Bruder, der die spätere Kaiserin Maria Theresia heiratete, nach Wien und nahm als Generalfeldmarschall sowohl an den Türkenkriegen als auch am Erbfolgekrieg gegen Friedrich II. von Preußen teil. Er war in Böhmen und in den Niederlanden zunächst erfolglos, woraufhin er nach Wien zurückkehrte. Nach dem endgültigen Sieg Friedrichs II. 1757 entzog Maria Theresia ihm den Oberbefehl über die kaiserlichen Truppen, und er ging wieder in die Niederlande, wo er 1780 starb. Die Miniatur ist in leuchtenden Gouachefarben auf Pergament gemalt. Karl Alexander ist vor einem in kräftigen Farben gehaltenen Hintergrund mit Bäumen und Büschen dargestellt. Der Künstler betonte das Gesicht durch besonders große Augen und volle, leuchtend rote Lippen. Seine Gemahlin, Herzogin Maria Anna von Lothringen (1718-1744), jüngere Schwester der österreichischen Kaiserin, ist hier in freier Natur als Diana dargestellt: In der Rechten hält sie einen Bogen; der dazugehörige Köcher ist neben der linken Hand zu sehen, mit der sie ihr Gesicht stützt. Ihre Kleidung besteht aus einem sehr eleganten, mit Stickereien und Spitzen verzierten Kleid mit blauem Unterkleid, das Haar ihrer Perücke ist zurückgebunden und fällt in Locken auf die Schulter. D.
