Summary[edit]

Description

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000, World Refugee Day is now globally celebrated on 20 June. In recognition of this day Archives New Zealand is highlighting relevant records from our collections.

The image above is from an Alien Registration file. Records in this series refer to individuals who were registered as aliens under the Aliens Control Emergency Regulations 1939. This particular file relates to migrant Karl Raimund Popper, considered by many as one of the greatest scientific minds of the 20th Century.

Born in Austria of Jewish ancestry, he and his wife fled Nazi Europe and later resettled in Christchurch. Popper was employed at Canterbury College as a Senior Lecturer of Philosophy when he published one of his most well-known works “The Open Society and its Enemies”.
