Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Karlu Karlu (Devils Marbles) and striking cloud patterns. Northern Territory - Australia

Stunning rock formation found in Northern Territory, Australia. Matching the impressive colours of this rock display were the cloud formations on the day. Dark imposing greys underneath and bright sunlit tops, combined with the colours of the desert from recent rains and made for an amazing palette of nature.

(edited Wiki def).

The Devils Marbles are large granitic boulders. The natural process of weathering and erosion have shaped these boulders and give the illusion of separate boulders precariously balancing on one another but are in fact the same boulder. The boulders are situated in a wide and shallow desert valley, and are found in scattered groups mainly in the western side of the reserve along the Stuart Highway. The one pictured is the most spherical of the formation and is only connected at the base by about a 12 inch section. One day it will crack and roll off and remain whole or possibly split cleanly in two as others have done.
