Summary

[edit]
Description

In the Korean domestic and other Asian markets, Kia sells this vehicle as the K5. However, in the US and certain other markets, it becomes the third-generation Optima.

This is the hybrid version, using the same powertrain (2.4L Atkinson-cycle engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, and an LG lithium polymer battery pack) as its twin sister, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. I had test-driven another Optima Hybrid just minutes prior outside the exhibition halls, and liked it quite a lot.

The Optima Hybrid is rated at 35 MPG city and 40 highway; under the less-than-ideal test drive loop conditions, it was getting about 30 MPG according to the onboard monitors.

The quietness and good ergonomics of the Optima Hybrid are on par with luxury cars, but so is the price, coming in at $32,320 after adding navigation and leather.

Kia's new assembly plant in West Point, Georgia, USA now builds the Optima, alongside the Sorento utility and the Hyundai Santa Fe utility; however, the hybrid version of the Optima is still built by Kia's Korean home assembly facilities.
