Title |
knee buckle |

Description |
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy trapezoidal knee buckle, with drilled frame for a separate spindle, but missing its spindle. The spindle would have had a chape and pin attached to it, which are also missing. The frame has curved outer edges with moulded fan-like motifs consisting of oblique grooves where the pin would rest. At either end of the spindle hole, the frame is decorated with a central lobe and mirroring moulded scrolls on either side. One of the holes has some iron corrosion product still within it and around the surrounding lobe, suggesting that the spindle might have been made of iron or steel. The underside of the frame is flat with a bevelled inner edge. The frame measures 25.6 mm in length, 16.4 mm in width and 2 mm in thickness. The weight is 2.48g.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates knee buckles with similar decoration on page 98, Nos.610-611, which are dated from 1660-1720. |
