W XII w. gród kasztelański, prawa miejskie ok. 1295; należał do księstwa głogowskiego; od 1331 pod zwierzchnictwem Czech, dzielił losy polit. Śląska; od 1742 w państwie pruskim (zgermanizowana nazwa Lüben); w XIV–XV w. miasto rzemieślniczo-handl.; ośr. sukiennictwa, w XVII–XIX w. płóciennictwa; od XIX w. rozwój przemysłu, m.in. spoż.; w czasie II wojny światowej zniszczony w ok. 70%; od 1945 w granicach Polski, odbudowany. |
