Français : ;L’hospice Saint-Charles « Dans les années 1820-1830, Québec est l’un des grands ports du monde et de plus en plus d’immigrants y débarquent, avec tous les problèmes que cela occasionne, notamment les épidémies. C’est pourquoi, au début des années 1830, on y construit un hôpital de la Marine. L’institution est située dans le quartier Saint-Roch, en bordure de la rivière Saint-Charles, face à la rue Panet (aujourd’hui des Embarcatins). Il est en opération jusqu’en 1889. L’année suivante, les sœurs du Bon-Pasteur en font l’acquisition pour en faire un asile pour jeunes filles, puis un orphelinat. C’est l’Hospice Saint-Charles. Le 14 décembre 1927, un incendie ravage l’établissement en emportant avec lui la vie d’une trentaine d’enfants et de quelques religieuses. L’édifice est aussitôt reconstruit. On continuera d’y accueillir les orphelins jusqu’au début de la guerre, en 1940, alors qu’il est loué à l’Aviation. En 1945, on le transforme en hôpital militaire puis, l’année suivante, en hôpital pour les vétérans. Cet «Hôpital des Anciens combattants» sera en opération jusqu’en 1954 alors qu’il déménage dans un édifice tout neuf, situé à Sainte-Foy, près de l’Université Laval. C’est ce nouvel hôpital des Vétérans qui deviendra plus tard le CHUL. Quant à l’ancien hospice Saint-Charles, il sera complètement détruit par les flammes en 1962. Sur cette photographie de 1936, on constate que, malgré l’incendie de 1927, l’hospice Saint-Charles avait conservé l’aspect qu’il avait à la fin de sa construction en 1834. » Société historique de Québec |
