Title
Late Early-Medieval buckle
Description
English: Incomplete Late Early-Medieval to Early Medieval (11th-12th century) copper alloy D-shaped buckle, with edge damage in places and missing its pin. It measures 27.68x25.04x10.23mm and weighs 11.34g.

The outside edge is rather tall, c.8mm high and c.5mm wide. It is decorated with a number of thick diagonal and squarish ribs (3-4mm wide and 3-6mm tall), giving a twisted rope pattern. A D-shaped notch cut at the centre in one side only (3.75x2.95mm) would have been a rest for the missing pin.

The axis bar is chunky and oval in section (3.97x3.17mm) with three moulded projecting knops at the join of axis bar and frame, possibly a devolved zoomorphic terminal as seen on other D-shaped buckle frames of this date.

Cf. NMS-FCC6A4, a D-shaped buckle frame from Norfolk with similar twisting and thickened outside edge. The shape of the frame and the decoration suggest influence of the Ringerike style.
