Title
Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval: Floral annular buckle
Description
English: A copper alloy annular buckle, with moulded floral decoration, of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (c.1450 to 1550 AD).

The buckle consists of the frame with integral bar. The pin has been lost in antiquity. The frame is sub circular in plan, and rectangular in cross section. The front of the frame consists of a central bar, D-shaped in cross section, surrounded by a circular frame. The external edge is irregular but consists of a series of semi-circular projections. The front of the buckle exhibits a floral design, which consists of a five petalled flower with each petal being double lobed (the semi-circular projections along the external edge). The exterior edge has been bevelled. The back of the buckle frame is plain.

The buckle is a mid to dark green colour with an even patina. There are traces of red iron staining around the central bar, which are probably the remains of an iron pin.

The buckle measures 31.2 mm in length, 26.9 mm wide and 2.8 mm thick. It weighs 5.8 grams.

Similar buckles are depicted in Whitehead (2003, pp. 47, #273) dated from c. 1450 to 1550 AD, and in Margeson (1993, pp. 29, #157), dating from 1561-1690 AD. Several similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database including HAMP-870415, SUSS-6F5EC7, HAMP-908864, and DENO-D32076.
