Title |
Late Medieval to Post Medieval: Candlestick |
||
Description |
English: Fragment from a cast copper alloy candlestick probably the stem and bowl, dating from the later Medieval – Post medieval periods, probably 15th to the 17th century (c.1400 – 1600 AD). The fragment is irregular in both plan and profile. It is likely to be from the union between the bowl and the stem. The upper part of the fragment (bowl) has straight sides which taper at an angle to the stem. The lower part of the fragment has a raised double circumferential stepped convex moulding beneath which the fragment tapers to a slight stem. At the point of the break a slight ridge is present which may hint at a further circumferential moulding, although much slighter than the lower stepped one.
The fragment measures 40.7mm in length, 29.1mm in width, is maximum 14.5mm thick, (the metal is 3.4 maximum thickness) and weighs 14.94 grams. The fragment is a mid green black colour with a much abraded and corroded patina. It is likely that the candlestick was covered in a blackened surface (such as applied linseed oil) although this black colour is present on both the outer ad inner surfaces. A candlestick with a similar bowl and stem with two collars is illustrated in ‘English Latten Domestic Candlestick’ by R Brownsword, figure 10-11 (FRG datasheet 1). |
