Title |
late Medieval to Post Medieval Double Loop Oval Buckle Frame with Moulded Decoration |
||
Description |
English: A late Medieval to Post Medieval cast copper alloy double loop oval buckle frame with moulded decoration, c. 1450-1650 AD. The buckle frame consists of lipped loops flanked on each side by two groups of moulded oblique ridges and a narrowed strap bar. The pin is missing, although traces of iron corrosion on strap bar and to one side of the buckle frame suggest that it would have been composed of iron. The buckle measures 26.2 mm long, 22.8 mm wide and 3.2 mm thick; it weighs 5 grams.
Whitehead (2003) illustrates similar examples (cf. pp 60-61), which suggest that this frame dates either to a slightly earlier type with serrated or cusped edges (c. 1450-1600 AD) or a related type with more precise moulded decoration (c. 1550-1650 AD). For the closest example, cf. Whitehead 2003, No. 361, dating to c. 1550-1650 AD. |
